The safety of children and youth in school and outside of it.

The safety of children and youth, both in school and outside of it, is a key issue that requires attention from parents, teachers, authorities, and the entire community.

In today's article, we will discuss current threats, safety statistics, and proposed solutions that can help minimize risks.

Current Threats and Statistics

Recent studies show that the number of incidents related to the safety of children and youth is increasing. According to a UNICEF report from 2022, violence in schools affects one in three students worldwide. Children and youth are exposed to various threats, both physical and psychological, including peer violence, cyberbullying, and various types of accidents.

Statistics also indicate that thousands of school accidents are reported annually in Poland. Research from the Central Statistical Office shows that in the 2020/2021 school year, there were over 35,000 accidents in Polish schools. The vast majority of these are limb injuries, but there are also more serious incidents that require medical intervention.

Physical Threats

Physical threats in schools include peer violence, accidents on school grounds

and on the way to and from school. Peer violence, both physical and psychological, is a serious problem that can lead to long-term health and emotional consequences. School accidents often result from improper use of school infrastructure, lack of supervision by teachers, and insufficient education on safety.

Psychological Threats

Psychological threats include cyberbullying, stress, peer pressure, and emotional problems. Cyberbullying, or online violence, is a phenomenon that has intensified in recent years. Children and youth increasingly experience attacks, insults, and even online blackmail, leading to serious psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.

Proposed Solutions:

  1. Education and Training: A key element in ensuring safety is education. Schools should regularly organize safety training, including first aid, dealing with violence, and cyber security. Parents should also be aware of the threats and know how to respond to crisis situations.
  2. Monitoring and Protection: The introduction of modern monitoring systems in schools can significantly improve safety. Surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and the presence of security personnel on school grounds can effectively prevent many incidents.
  3. Psychological Support: Schools should employ psychologists who are available to students in need of support at any time. Regular meetings with a psychologist can help identify emotional problems and prevent their escalation.
  4. Social Projects: Organizing social projects such as workshops, support groups, or educational campaigns can help raise awareness about threats and ways to avoid them. Collaboration with local non-governmental organizations can further strengthen these efforts.
  5. Increased Presence of Law Enforcement: An increased presence of security, police, and municipal guards around schools, especially in the mornings and afternoons, can enhance the sense of security among students and their parents.
  6. Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle: Schools should promote a healthy lifestyle by organizing sports activities and nutrition education. Regular physical activity and a healthy diet positively impact the physical and mental health of children and youth.

Summary

The safety of children and youth in school and outside of it is a complex issue that requires the involvement of many individuals and institutions. Through education, the implementation of modern technologies, psychological support, and close cooperation with local authorities and non-governmental organizations, we can create an environment where young people can develop safely and healthily. Understanding the mechanisms behind threats and responding appropriately is key to building a safe future for our children.
